A short lesson / About 10 minutes

See the light.
Then take the picture.

You already have a camera. This lesson is about noticing what’s in front of it.

01 / Notice

One window is enough.

Place a simple object near a window. Look at the bright side, then the shadow side. Move around it and watch the shape change.

Take one photograph facing the window, one from the side and one with the window behind you. The subject hasn’t changed. The picture has.

02 / Choose

Decide what to leave out.

Move a little closer. Look at the corners of your frame before you press the shutter. Remove one distracting thing and take the picture again.

A question to ask yourself

What do I want someone to notice first? If you can answer that in one sentence, you have a useful starting point.

03 / Practice

Your three-picture exercise.
